History of The Star Lookout
Lisa Starr developed this special property in the early '70s and raised her son, Kualono, high on the slopes of Haleakala. The caretakers' home was originally an office building of the Puunene Dairy, located near the town of Kahului. The house itself is over 100 years old.
In 1978 Lisa and a friend designed and built the guest cottage in its current setting. Janice and Steve Tower have owned The Star Lookout since 2000 and have retained that "Old Maui" spirit upon which it was founded.
Ray and Barbara Bane, dear friends of the Towers, lived in the caretaker's cottage for 24 years before they passed beyond their golden years. Prior to moving to Maui, Ray and Barbara lived in Alaska for 37 years, living and teaching among indigenous people and working in air transportation and for the National Park Service. Their amazing lives are chronicled in "Our Perfect Wild: Ray and Barbara Bane's Journeys and the Fate of the Far North," published by the University of Alaska Press, 2016. Zsuzsanna Balogh has the fortune of taking over for the Banes, caretaking the cottage and acting as host to our honored guests.
